Let me just say that I’m not particularly a Julia Roberts fan. So when my wife asked to go see Notting Hill in the theater, I politely declined… but I figured that I’d give her a suprise and buy the DVD for her. Well, I sat and watched it with her, and was pleasantly suprised, myself!

Set in the real-life Notting Hill section of London, this VERY fairy-tale story is filled with moments of true belly-aching laughter, painful heartbreak, and one delightful “car chase.”

Julia Roberts portrays Anna Scott, a fifteen-million-dollar per picture movie actress who gets tangled in the trappings of love with William Thacker, a bumbling, but likeable book-shop owner convincingly played by Hugh Grant. Notting Hill wastes no time in setting up this premise and rockets off from there. The film moves along at a good pace and only has one noticible slow spot. The music chosen to accompany the film is beyond perfect. Watch the screen closely when you hear “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers.

I would be remiss if I did not mention “Spike”. Rhys Ifans plays Spike, William’s very odd, very Welsh flat mate. You can’t help but laugh every time he’s on the screen. Luckily, the director and editor didn’t over-do Spike’s antics, so we can truly enjoy the moments when he’s on.

The Collector’s Edition goodies make the DVD a true gem and a great bargain. The musical highlights let you quickly jump into the middle of the movie to enjoy a song while watching the movie roll. (After you’ve watched the movie, go find “Ain’t No Sunshine”!) The deleted scenes give a glimpse of what could have happened in the film. After watching, I’d say that I agree with the director’s choice of endings.

This movie proves that romantic comedies can still be done well… and you don’t have to have Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan to do it.

Hugh Grant’s role as Travel Book Shop employee William Thacker reprises the same shy, humble, lovable, but lonely character with a small group of friends that made him a star in Four Weddings And A Funeral. That may be because Notting Hill, like FW&AF, was written by Richard Curtis. “And so it was another hopeless Wednesday when I walked a thousand yards to work, not suspecting that this was going to be the day my life would be changed forever.” In two words, that catalyst is Anna Scott, currently one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, who is promoting her latest film Helix, a sci-fi film whose costume design and one interior setting owes a nod to Kubrick’s 2001. She happens in his bookshop, but that first meeting sets off a series of meetings where they spend time with each other.

Eccentric barely describes Spike, his Welsh roommate with a shock of wild blond hair. Never have I seen a more comical opposites since Felix and Oscar of the Odd Couple. Spike is clearly the Oscar of the pair, but then again, I doubt if Oscar would have worn a T-shirt saying, “Get It Here”, with an arrow pointing downwards, or unwittingly mistake mayonnaise for yogurt.

In the course of meeting Anna, he in turn introduces her to his small group, including a married couple, Max and Belle, the latter in a wheelchair, a stockbroker named Bernie, and William’s wild-looking sister Honey, whose bulging eyes and feathery hair makes her nevertheless lovable in a different sort of way.

However, they live in two different worlds. As William puts it, “I live in Notting Hill, you live in Beverly Hills.” Both have different schedules, lifestyles, and perspectives on things. Yet his inner smile lights up whenever she pops in and spends some time with him. And applying a metaphor used, Anna is a goddess. “You know what happens to mortals who get involved with the gods?” That’s terrible for William, who confides in Spike that it’s like “taking love heroin and I couldn’t have it again. I’ve opened Pandora’s Box and there’s trouble inside.”

Anna is a typical box-office draw who has to put up with the tail side of the fame coin. The many boyfriends, the laying out of her private life in the tabloids, but also how she’s unable to live an ordinary life and how she has to put up with unkind words, as when she overhears a group of businessmen saying how actresses are equal to prostitutes and that she is the definitive actress. Ouch! But despite the fame, in the end, she’s “just a girl asking a boy to love her.”

The one pullback aerial shot that has the couple approaching the bench dedicated to a loved one, while Ronan Keating sings Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing At All” was a perfect combination of great camera work enhanced by a haunting love song.

Hugh Grant has another winning role and seems to have the knack of starring opposite great female leads and being compatible. Be it Andie McDowell (Four Weddings) or Emma Thompson (Sense And Sensibility), he does himself and Julia Roberts great credit. After seeing this at the theatre when it first came out, I sighed with relief that I finally found the most charming movie with Julia Roberts since Pretty Woman. All the actors portraying Williams’ small circle also lend great support, but Rhys Ifan steals the show as the outlandish Spike. Those who liked Four Weddings will definitely go for Notting Hill, which has a tad more sweetness, like apricot and honey.

Don’t be fooled by some of the negative reviews here. Star Trot III: The Search for Spock is a thoughtful meditation on the nature of friendship. I savor its careful attention to developing a classical memoir arc in which Kirk is driven by inconvenience for his friends (Spock and McCoy) and by outer events (a feckless Federation bureaucracy) to rob the Enterprise and outwit and outrun enemies on all sides. Indeed, the film’s first act is a gem: a model of balanced writing in its build-up to Kirk’s inexorable conclusion that he must prefer the Enterprise to establish his friends. Among the priceless scenes in that first half-hour: A visit by Spock’s father to Kirk’s San Francisco pad in which, during a “mind meld” between them, successive shots waste with a unruffled, touching close-up of Kirk’s observe as he relives Spock’s “death” in the previous film; Scottie’s hilarious asides toward a pompous captain played deftly by character actor James Sikking; and Kirk being told by a safe officer that under no conditions can he undertake a mission to build his friends as the camera tracks in on him, staring off in the middle distance, his inevitable insubordination written on his face. Favorable stuff. Even better is the focus (singularly among the Star Scoot movies, which usually pain the Enterprise crew saving the Earth or the universe) on Kirk’s mission to attach his friends and the sacrifices he makes in the process. I can order you (if you haven’t seen the film) that these sacrifices are famous, in once case touchingly shaded and in another spectacular. Other reasons to examine Star Lumber III: It contains a terrific, droll, self-consciously strapping but composed tough villain played by Christopher Lloyd; a really trustworthy, early James Horner (of Great fame) score; radiant special effects (including the real-time destruction of a planet tearing itself apart that holds up well) ; William Shatner’s best performance ever (be unprejudiced — he does a nice, even subtle job in this film as a soulful, resourceful, and self-sacrificing Kirk — indeed, the Kirk character has never been more absorbing) ; an apropos climax that, current to the science fiction genre, is understated and gentle and moving; a swift pace; deft direction from Leonard Nimoy; superb surprises that, when I first saw the film, I could not enjoy were happening (including a clever and mighty one enthralling the Enterprise itself) ; and a mythic elementalism in which the battle-scarred Enterprise crew seems straight out of Homer and Kirk makes a forceful stand-in for Odysseus. This film deserves a reappraisal from Trekkers, but more importantly, from the general public. Nicely done.

Star streak III is widely considered to be an infinitely depraved sequel to The Wrath of Khan, yet is in fact a more complex film and has a powerful more difficult task area in front of it. Although not perfect, it is an though-provoking chronicle filled with a number of profitable reversals and has some of Shatner’s best acting.

Montalban is the absolute driving force in Star Run II and mighty of that film relies on this fact. Christopher Lloyd does a exquisite job as a merciless Klingon, yet it is up to Shatner to carry this film. And he does an gigantic job. His stealing of the Enterprise gives Kirk support the initiative in the entire series, and is one of the all-time tremendous moments for the modern cast. Why this sequence, and so many others, is not given more credit is beyond me. One gripe: As usual, Kirk gets a LOT of shroud time, cut-aways shots etc. at the expense of the other cast members.

Mired in some indispensable exposition, The Search for Spock effectively navigates its plot through Klingons, Vulcans, the tragic genesis project, Starfleet regulations… no easy task. The finale is lovingly presented, and tests the depths of not only the crews’s emotions but that of the audience and fans. Nimoy did a splendid job with this film, and it led the contrivance to the unprecedented Star Lope IV.

OK, I’m an Indian and like many other indians I too fancy this movie and so you might reflect this is an biased review. But far from it,as even though its been 10 years since this movie was released,no hindi movie has since advance end to matching this ones greatness. I’m certain Indian readers wont be needing this review, so I will write this review for the Western readers.

For starters all hindi movies are musicals, i.e they involve song and dance numbers. I do not know why, but it has always been this blueprint. So if you like musicals you will topple in worship with this movie as the music is top notch and excellently choreographed and blends in well very well with the dwelling.

This is a savor record to open with and a very profitable one, that too. Though the storyline is familiar, boy falls in fancy with a girl, girl’s dad is the hurt in the butt, boy tries hard to get the girl and finally wins over the girl :), what sets this movie apart is the sizzling chemistry between SRK and Kajol and unprejudiced performances from the entire star cast. And I guess what appealed to the masses is that unlike in other movies, the hero does NOT accelerate away with the girl nor does he exercise violence as means to interpret his worship for the girl. So then how does he bag the girl? Well for that you will have to inspect the entire movie. So approach and drop in adore with the movie.

Note: Hindi with English subtitles.

This DVD is fragment of a 7 pronged advance to teaching my preschool twins the preliminaries to becoming successful readers.

My oldest son has had wretchedness reading. He went to an expensive Montessori for 3 years prior to entering school, but I had to own him succor to uncover 1st grade. I am indignant at myself for not having taken his phonics and reading program into my possess hands from the time he was 3. NOTHING replaces one-on-one time daily with a child, even if it’s honest 15 minutes a day. Consistency and patience is key.

I have several things in rotation for drilling the twins on phonics. They mediate it’s all a fun game, however. This DVD plays a fragment in their daily exposure to phonics and the fundamentals of reading….they were calling out the peek words on this DVD within a week and a half. And that is what these words are: Peep WORDS, which are supposed to be memorized. The animation may not match the exact word meaning, but it serene works, and well. Better to exhaust [...] and have them vegetate and LEARN something vs. watching SpongeBob. Initiate them early. They will feel special and incandescent when in class they are the one who can read these…what a confidence booster!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Meet the Sight Words 2! Click Here

As for our learning thought here’s what we are using (Besides Meet the Glimpse Words) :

1. Win It to Your Seat Phonics Centers, Grades K-1 This book is a bunch of fun learning games/puzzles for the kids. There are several in the series. Do not create the mistake of thinking that you can sit them in a corner with this. Idea on spending 15 - 30 mins the first time through each employ, harder ones require your assistance every time. These are tools, not babysitters. (Any DVD is more of a babysitter, however.) I bought a laminator for [...] from Sam’s Warehouse to create these last.

2. LeapFrog Word Whammer, Fridge Phonics State and the single phonics one: LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Station If they had questions about the sound a letter made, I taught them how to pick up out themselves by finding the letter on the fridge then getting the Fridge Phonics plot to issue them the sound. Thus if they ever wanted to know, they could succor themselves at any time.

In 6 months both my twins were able to dwelling the letter names and the sounds they made. All is not perfect, however. One is quiet singing the alphabet song “…HIKK LMNOP…” Oh well…he can order them accurately, however, if he’s looking at them. Visual learner, I guess…

3. Leap Frog Videos. Leap Frog - Letter Factory, Leap Frog - Talking Words Factory, and Leap Frog - Talking Words Factory 2 - Code Word Caper. The last one is kind of advanced, but exposure to it is not hurting the exertion. It’s my daughter’s common one.

4. Post-its shaped like the letters of the alphabet. Got these at Wal-Mart, cant gather them on Amazon as of this writing. Each child got a letter to stick on somethign in the house that began with that letter sound. Again, this was only a 15 min exhaust, even though they wanted to continue.

5. Books on tape from the library, trips to the library. Reading books to them is not one of my well-liked things because they finish me multiple times to ask questions and (since there are two of them) this extends the reading time to 30 mins or more on one book. Usually this is unbiased before bedtime when they are stalling and I am exhausted…so books on tape from the library are an genuine alternative. The point is to fetch them involved in reading. After the Meet the Peer Words DVD, they were enraged to accept a peruse word that they knew on almost every page.

6. Zigzag on Phonics Learn to Read Pre-K Edition This series is the least-used item in the program. This is mainly because it is unprejudiced not as FUN as the other stuff and requires me to motivate them as well as fully divulge. Other stuff is more able to practically advise itself. HOP is a drilling/practice tool. However, I wreck out the HOP program once a week. To accept anywhere on this, it takes about one hour each time you do an use. However, the CD game that comes with this situation is vast for early phonics learning. They have a magician who tries to change a Hat into a Cat, for instance, and the child has to lift the factual letter out of 3 possible choices. Very simple, very instructional. They rep rewarded with animation and praise on the computer cover. I have looked all over for a simple Phonics learning CD like the one in here, and this is the only one like it I have found. Again, if you win HOP, inquire to have to work at it with your kid. I exercise the included letter cards to play “Go Fish” where I ask ” do you have Colossal A? ” if I already have exiguous A. I say the SOUND of the letter, not the name. And occasionally to be humorous I might pretend I don’t know a sound properly and ask if they have “Gargantuan PFFT” where PFFT is the sound of a fart. (As if one of the letters makes that sound! This always draws substantial belly laughs…) Kids cherish potty humor. Spend with discretion. LOL. Design determined you sound really confused like Mr. Noodle would when you do it…but “Go Fish” is really useful, especially if you develop definite that they net…which is easy since tiny kids never enjoy their cards where you can’t watch them. They should already know the letter sounds a bit before trying “Go Fish.”

7. Reader Rabbit educational CDs Reader Rabbit Learn to Read Phonics Preschool - Kindergarten (Jewel Case) for their age group (on the PC) . These are a filler, because they don’t always focus on what I am teaching, but they are aloof very remarkable worth it. We actually got the Reader Rabbit: Thinking Adventures (Jewel Case) from Chik-Fil-A as a fragment of their meal and it was a very excellent surprise to fetch that the CD was chock bulky of challenging logic puzzles, and matching games in a matrix format that teaches the understanding of matching in a matrix. The matching games taught concepts that were enough of a stretch for a 4 year conventional to be a challenge but do-able with a dinky initial attend. My twins Worship this software.

I researched and feeble each of these items and methods. For myself, I got a couple of books for ME to read to attend with my older son: The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child. It’s not too leisurely for him, but he needs some successes. We are slowly getting there. The other book I got for myself to read and understand how children can better learn reading is The Reading Reflex: The Foolproof Draw for Teaching Your Child to Read. Children study reading differently than adults. This book helped me more with the younger twins than my older son, but we are doing the more advanced drills with him. He is almost finished with the second try at 1st grade and is reading at 1st grade level. He is tested at 3rd grade level idea in math. He shows signs of being an engineer like his mom someday…. :^)

Good Luck! (Actually luck has nothign to do with it. A definite attitude, patience, and doing some work with your child for at least 15 minutes every day will gain you along farther. More than 30 mins at a time may tire out your kid…putting away the materials while they are calm clambering for more ensures that they will be exasperated when you retract it out the following day….accomplish it fun! )

———-

The twins have started school. I accept I have been remiss in two areas: counting to 20, and WRITING. I highly recommend adding writing to the repetoire. My daughter is heavenly, my son lags her in writing and radiant motor skills. I found estimable resources, but the best by far for teaching writing is Mead’s Writing Fundamentals:Capital Letter Stories “Pathways For Learning M2-201 Capital Letter Stories” featuring alphaboxes paper. The standard elementary paper is broken up into blue, green, and brown. The letters are shown as figures, e.g., the letter B is a girl (first downward stroke), and there’s a bee that flies from her hat to her belt and then to her feet to beget the letter ‘B.’ This hit a chord with them, it made sense to the twins, I could spy a light dawning. I tried significant ruled paper and tracing letters with tracing paper, but this region of activity sheets by Mead was powerful more successful in getting them to actually try to write their letters. Assume Label that the Letter Stories paper pads are available for far less in some well-liked brick & mortar stores (f ive clams or less.) Magnificent motor skills can also be improved (along with safe pencil grip) with mazes (pencil & paper kind) . I am able to gain these at some free educational sites online.

As for counting, I weak Skittles to indicate each child how many Skittles would be represented by each number up to 20. The simple act of counting to twenty every time you net in the car would be enough exposure. Additionally, you can try phonics games that impart how to string sounds to compose a word. E.g., “I am going to say a word very slowly, can you guess what word I am saying? ” And then sound out cat by saying the hard C, count out one second to yourself, then say the short A sound, then the T sound.

One last caveat: obtain distinct your child can write their name before starting kindergarten!

I purchased Meet the Witness Words 1,2,&3 DVDs for my 5 year venerable son. He has caught on really hastily and can purchase out almost all the study words from the 1st DVD. Once we complete DVDs 2 & 3 he should be able to read a short record. This was a astronomical investment and I wish I would have learned about it earlier.

This is a poignant, artistic and insightful movie perfect for Spanish classes for a lot of it is in Spanish, but for other classrooms as well. It delves into the lives of three young children whose fathers have left their countries in search of work or better opportunities and in a candid method shows the harm and desolation of those left late. It also depicts the lengths that a child will go to in order to be reunited with his/her father.

Sad, but realistically attractive!

I caution parents with young children to shroud it before showing it. It has some very strong deliver. The images and situations haunt you for days.

I don’t know what it is about this note on TV but my daughter can’t gather enough of it. It is one of the only shows she will sit and eye launch to achieve without bright a muscle. So for the display I have to give it 5 stars but this review is specific to this DVD.

It is a lot like the demonstrate with a few more songs it seems. Both the episodes are tremendous but my complaint is that you only accumulate two. There are some decent extras on this disc but my daughter is 2 and it’s more about the expose. I have also had peril playing this disc on my car DVD player which I’m obvious is tied to Disney copy protection as other DVD’s work beautiful.

Disney has something called snappy play which seems like a vast understanding. My impression of speedily play would be keep it in and it goes straight to the note. Well it does that but not without playing several previews from other DVD’s that are available. This should be a selection off of the main menu and not force you to examine them on snappy play.

The episodes are a half hour long so they could have easily fit at least two more episodes on the DVD for greater value. A Doodlebops DVD gets four episodes on one DVD and costs 10 - 12 dollars. This one puts two episodes on one and costs 15 - 22 dollars. I can’t assist but feel like they are bilking me a petite bit. I found it at Target for 15.00 and it looks like you can net it broken-down on Amazon for conclude to the same ticket.

All in all obliging DVD impartial too remarkable for what you are getting. If you can acquire it cheaper than retail or stale I would definately take.

This DVD features two episodes of the computer-animated “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” television series. The first is an Easter special, Mickey’s Spacious Clubhouse Hunt. In this double-length (49-minute) episode, when Mickey invites his friends over to celebrate the holiday, Pete seeks revenge when he is left out. There’s a well-behaved song, “The Best Easter Party Ever.” A second episode, “Donald Hiccups”, finds the “duck with all the awful luck” unable to grunt on Clarabelle Cow’s TV prove when he comes down with the spasms.

Both shows include the typical Playhouse Disney dose of basic arithmetic, decision-making, music and puzzles. Other characters appearing include Ludwig von Drake, Chip ‘n Dale (briefly), even Willie the Giant from the classic cartoon “Mickey and the Beanstalk.” There’s nothing ground-breaking here, but if your preschooler likes the TV point to this is a nice addition.

Okay, Kurumi is THE best anime. And Encore unbiased makes it all better. Lots of laughs, especially the first episode where Saki becomes a movie star. And, if fans can enjoy it’s possible, Kurumi redefines the meaning of stupidity once again for all our enjoyment. I must say though it’s comical because I acquire the creators were making up for the nudity quota in the 1st 4 discs all in this one, the bathhouse scenes with Saki and Kurumi are gorgeous humorous. All in all fabulous and chubby of laughs, as they say, “a must for all Kurumi fans!” Plus there’s a preview of Kurumi 2, I judge it’s the opening theme, and the fragment with Kurumi transforming is hilarious. So please, occupy Encore, you’ll like it!!!

I really liked these four episodes, but I personally believe Karinka got a minute soft in these episodes. The first one is when Saki becomes a movie star. In the second one, Karinka get’s a admire letter (awwwwwww!), third one Karumi becomes a women (haha!), and the last one is when a whole group of angels wants to fight Karumi for a kiss from Nakahito! The last one is my personal well-liked. Sizable DVD. I recommend it.

Filmmakers have been combining animation and live action since the days of still film–but 1988’s WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT not only bested everything done previously, it site a standard that is unlikely to be surpassed. Although it has been available on VHS and in a mediocre DVD release for quite a few years, the film finally gets the star treatment in this “Vista Series” double DVD release, which includes the film in both pan-and-scan and letterbox formats and an assortment of extras, many of which are quite though-provoking.

The idea and narrative are well known: cartoon characters are not drawings, but are living entities who work in the film industry, and when Maroon Cartoon star Roger Rabbit is accused of murdering Marvin Acme (Stubby Kaye), he turns to private detective Eddie Valorous (Bob Hoskins) for relieve. Difficulty is, Eddie hates “Toons.” After all, one of them offed his brother, and Eddie hasn’t been sober since. The belief is a clever one, and the sage could have gone in any number of directions–but ROGER RABBIT hops down a completely unexpected travel. Place in 1947 Los Angeles, the film uses classic “noir” elements (and references everything from THE MALTESE FALCON to CHINATOWN) ; it also makes noteworthy sly social commentary on racism, with the “Toons” performing in a Cotton Club-like nightclub, literally working for peanuts at the studios, and more or less confined to living in “Toontown,” which might easily be read as social ghettoization. And all of these sidelights are racy and enchanting. But the most comely thing about ROGER RABBIT is that it is fair lifeless fun to inspect.

Part of that fun comes from the kindly performances of Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd (as the bad Mediate Doom), and Joanna Cassidy (Valiant’s sidekick Delores), who lead the live action cast. Another chunk of the fun is the plan in which the film cameos a host of noted cartoon characters, ranging from Betty Boop to Bugs Bunny and the Warner Bro.s gang to Dumbo–and animation buffs will adore the fact that Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny, to name but two, are voiced by the artists (Mae Questel and Mel Blanc) who created the character voices in the first station. But the grand deal here is the extremely believable intention in which the “Toons” fit into the actual world. They rendered with unbelievable detail and worthy three dimensionality. It’s fair an astonishing thing to scrutinize.

The overall DVD package is a bit strange, for it offers less in the device of bonuses than one might demand. The first disk includes a pan-and-scan version of the film, three Roger Rabbit/Baby Herman shorts, a kid-friendly documentary, and a CD-ROM game; the second disk offers the letterbox film with extras that will appeal to more obsolete viewers, most particularly on-set shots and a nifty documentary called “Slow the Ears.” The upshot is really a one-disk release that has been expanded to two by the trick of cramming both pan-and-scan and letterbox versions into a single package. That’s annoying–but even so, this is easily the best release of this film to date. It at gives the rabbit some justice at last, and I give it five stars on that basis.

One of the sizable joys of movie-going is to search for a opinion, that on-the-face-of-it is so goofy and off-beat that it should never work, but, in the demolish, does work and works in spades! So it was for me with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This Vista Series DVD brings the film to us with a crisp & spruce represent, THX sound, and a beautifully packaged location of extras that include a very clever interactive menu, plus loads of goodies presented smartly, with humor and surprises.

Seeing the film again reminded me how impressed I was with the audacity and accomplishment of Bob Zemeckis and his collaborators on bringing off with care and intelligence, a exciting & humorous film that plays to both children & adults. Who would have thunk it?

Taking a Chinatown-like account of early Los Angeles with some basis in fact (destroying the Red Line to earn scheme for freeways) complete with slay & intrigue & marrying it to the screwy conceit that cartoon figures, aka Toons, actually lived and worked as live actors and inhabited a allotment of LA called Toontown is such a manifestly dopey concept that it would catch grand inspiration, intelligence and attention to detail to perform it even nominally work. All of those qualities were prove, as the extras show, in abundance here, and the result was movie magic.

Made prior to CGI coming into its gain, the characters were brought to the camouflage brilliantly. As one of the animators pointed out, even early CGI was rejected because the film-makers wanted the characters to possess their cartoon view, only brought into 3 dimensions. The hows and whys of what they did to carry out this magic are worth a discover.

Anchored by the substantial casting of Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd and Joanna Cassidy and Charles Fleischer, incandescent technical work, and a clever chronicle strung through with large trustworthy humor, dialogue and jokes for kids and adults, this film has some cherished, popular lines, from Baby Herman’s “That’s my spot, I’ve got a 50 year-old lust, and a 3 year-old slight.”, to Jessica Rabbit’s: “I’m not awful, I’m honest drawn that diagram.”, to Eddie on the wayward bullets “Eh, Dum Dums!” This is large stuff.

“Toons, gets em every time!” Some kind of classic here, and well worth your while.

Superb. Seeing these twenty-six episodes together for the first time in fifteen years was truly a treat. The behind-the-scenes information is well done and worth the remove, and the menus are natty. The preview (Episode Log) camouflage for each of the seven discs is worthy, with each disc providing four scenes from each episode position to the backdrop of the main theme for the series. One of the benefits of the package is that production order and air date order are taken into consideration, and this shows with regard to the order in which each title is furnished in the menus (e.g., 121, 120, 122, 123) .

The first season has often been termed ’sterile’ by some; this probably has some merit given that any unusual series doesn’t necessarily have chemistry from the outset. However, some of the episodes are in the view of this writer among the best in the series–among these, “Code of Honor,” “Where No One Has Gone Before,” “Justice,” “The Grand Goodbye,” “Datalore,” “11001001,” “Home Soil,” “Coming of Age,” “Heart of Glory,” “The Arsenal of Freedom,” the Stefano-written “Skin of Unfriendly,” “Conspiracy,” and “The Neutral Zone”–the latter episode perhaps introducing us (albeit cryptically) to the Borg.

The segment on “Memorable Missions” was particularly poignant, especially the allotment where Natasha Yar (Denise Crosby) reflects on her work on ST:TNG. The interviews with the Production (and other) Staff were also very bright and informative; I found the excerpt with Michael Okuda piquant and eye-opening. This DVD boxed space is a must for lovers of any of the five Star Hurry series. I’ve already placed my order for ST:TNG Season Two. :)

Each season of TNG will be presented in a highly collectable box space, with seven discs and a pull-out booklet of episode information and a panoramic montage of the crew (Season 2 will have only six discs due to the abbreviated season of 22 episodes versus 26) . The seven box sets will effect an magnificent library of the entire series.

What has been said about the Sad Knight cannot be elaborated on - so I won’t. The film is muscling its draw into my #1 approved funny movie adaptation of all time.

The reason for my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn’t bid the tag you pay for it. There isn’t even deleted scenes!!! I would keep your very hard earned dollars and take the single disc version and wait for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release that will reach later on down the road.

But nonetheless, a large film - you will not be dissapointed; I fair wish the studio would have given a better Special Edition release than what we have here. So bask in!

Christopher Nolan has a vision. And whether you agree with it or not, he undeniably completes it in “The Shaded Knight”–a vicious, interesting, overwhelming, shimmering event- film that re-defines ‘comic-book-flicks’. In Nolan’s grim, dark-depiction of Gotham-City (the crime-ridden hell protected by legendary superhero Batman), the director strives to compose everything accurate (something he began in the well-received “Batman Begins”) . He makes it plausible, possible. And yet there’s more to it: fair as ‘Begins’ was a dissection of story, the nature of symbols and heroes, ‘Knight’ is the escalation of that belief. It’s a biblical- confrontation of ‘good-and-evil’, yet as ‘good-and-evil’ really exist: a conflict of ideals, something that can’t be purely-defined but that is relative to a viewpoint. In Nolan’s world, the line of villainy and heroism isn’t crossed… it’s non-existent. The bad-guys don’t scrutinize themselves as bad-guys, and as such something so unnervingly-real comes across it might coast past some people’s minds (no insult to anybody, it’s fair approved that people don’t study deep into ‘popcorn-flicks’) : the battle is a complete ambiguity.

The film runs at nearly 2.5-hours, yet never ceases to lose interest or momentum. It doesn’t raze a scene or moment; every event is utilized and vital. ‘The Dim Knight’ tells a record worth telling and it takes the friendly amount of time to bellow it. Action-sequences are frantic, old-school, eye-grabbing stunts (vastly generous to ‘Begins’) and in their chaotic intensity we ogle that they support purpose to the legend, yet more fascinating are not played for pure entertainment-value: we are meant to gape, vexed, simply hoping that the outcome will go the hero’s scheme. Attention is never lost because we are immersed in a breathtaking, almost completely-unpredictable anecdote (it packs many a shock), that makes us assume and more importantly gains our emotional-investment. We advance to care for the characters, because they are believable, developed, and personified fully.

Everyone has great-chemistry together. Maggie Gyllenhal is a more conventional Rachel Dawes than Katie Holmes. Morgan Freeman provides his authoritative presence to the role of bad- gadget-inventor/Wayne-Enterprise CEO Lucius Fox, and under anyone else’s portrayal, the fraction would be less-memorable. Gary Oldman underplays his world-wearied lawman with such honest-nobility, you never feel for a second any of its forced-acting. The irreplaceable Michael Caine makes a gentle, reassuring, father-like presence as Alfred, and the movie would surely fail without his strong-presence and interjected-moments of light-humor.

And while everyone (rightfully) pours the praise unto Bale and Ledger, I mediate most are glancing-over Knight’s breakout-performance. As Harvey Dent, Aaron Eckhart does more than contain himself in the company of such a renowned-cast. He makes his presence known, whether he’s playing on the easy-going charisma of Gotham’s ‘White-Knight’ or the broken and damaged, twisted-soul of Two-Face. He achieves a full-impact with the tragedy that comes unto his character, and so closely connects with Dent, that he makes his harm tangible for us: we sympathize even as we become apprehensive. He captures both facets of each personality flawlessly.

Now, some people cite that ‘Knight’ has a potential fatal-flaw in the supposedly wooden- acting of Christian Bale. Admittedly, his development is not as gigantic as in ‘Begins’ (yet that film gave us such a honorable psychoanalysis of Wayne, we hardly need more), yet what Bale pulls off is admirable. Wayne is not an eccentric personality. He is a disillusioned man who can hardly gather any joy in having no family, giving up his love-interest and spending his life fighting a battle that may never kill. He’s shadowy and conflicted, and Bale plays up on that brooding-mood by making Wayne gaze as though a thousand dark-things were on his mind. He’s not wooden…he’s a humorless, peaceful individual. Even when Wayne is acting as a frivolous playboy for the public, every now and then Bale offers us a much watch that reminds us its all a façade; that deep down, something more stupefied irks him. Occasionally he offers a broken-smile when exchanging banter with Alfred, letting us know that beyond the dour depression of the Caped-Crusader lies a damaged human-being. It is only in the guise of a growling masked-man, that he can unleash his correct, ferocious personality.

Finally, who could forget Heath Ledger. Now, when he was first-announced for the section, I was (along with many other people) asking myself: “Why? “. Mr. Ledger had proved with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ he could train a potent performance. But he hadn’t before. It is only, after seeing this film, that I know the reply to ‘why? ‘: I gaze the significance of his loss.

When Heath appears in this movie, he is completely unrecognizable. His snarl is distinctly-altered; a near-whiny, pedophile-like tone that sends shivers down the spine. His face is completely splattered with makeup that renders him both freakishly-nightmarish and strangely-funny. And when you spy him, you don’t believe it’s him. In this, his final performance, Ledger proved he was a chameleon. His two iconic performances in this, and ‘Brokeback’, could not be more different. I am convinced he could have been anything in his career. He commits so intensely to character that the line of actor/portrayal dies. His every tick and gesture only further-enhances his character. Heath never hams the role up or goes for something cheap: he delivers a fully-immersed present of psychotic madness…or do we unprejudiced mark him that to feel safer? The movie writes the character brilliantly; blending ghastly truth into his every social-accusation, and making us interrogate why we laugh at his sick-jokes.

‘The Shaded Knight’ has had an incredible-amount of hype running for it, from the get-go, mounting ever-higher, until Heath Ledger’s too-soon death. And the finished-product does more than exceed all of the near-impossible expectations placed on it. It becomes something mighty richer than a super-hero-franchise-saga. Christopher Nolan has opened a novel door in cinema: allowing action-flicks to become more serious, satisfactory of intelligence. He has transformed this into a portion of artwork, chunky of beauty, alarm, moral-conundrums. This movie has changed things…forever.

There’s no going benefit. 10/10
