Okay I’ll be the first!
With LCD TV prices dropping, I just had to get the Sony 65″ Bravia and needed something to make it sound better. It’s a lazy way to try and get 7.1-speaker system with out all the mess.
Set-up was clean and easy.
It has an IntelliBeam microphone that makes setting up the sound adjustment for you very simple.
The Wireless set up for subwoofers is a nice feature.
It also comes with a wireless setup for your iPod.
From 1 to 10 the TV speaker sound was about a 4.
With the YSP-5100 I now give it a 7
But if your watching a Blu-Ray movie it jumps to an 8 1/2.
The wireless transmitter for the iPod was broken. The box arrived in good shape, but Yamaha did not do such a good job on packing. It was crush and not useable.
I called customer service and after only a couple of minutes I got to speak to someone with an attitude. I Fed-Ex the broken parts back to Yamaha and now waiting for the results.
I’ve spent allot of time trying to set it up with my Logitech Harmony 1100.
The YSP-5100 comes with 5 HDMI connections, Logitech advises you to plug all your devices into the YSP. I’m clad I have an extended warranty with my Harmony, because I’m still not up and running with the remote, and Logitech customer support is hearing from me often.
The YSP-5100 comes with a terrific remote. So I would check it out before spending 300.00 on a universal one. There is a good chance I could be putting my Harmony 1100 on EBay.
If I were you I would wait for the price to drop. You’ll need a subwoofer and probably the mounting rack ….so tack on another 3 to 400.00.

Updated (again) thoughts on the Tamron 90mm
(Another year and one repair later, I still love this lens. Original review first followed by updates.)

First impression: right out of the box, this lens is smaller than I pictured. I had experience with the Sigma 105mm, and this is easily smaller and lighter. For travel purposes, it is ideal, plastic build or not.

I did get a few surprises when I put it on the camera (D70), so anyone thinking about purchasing this lens should pay attention. This info is already out there, I just didn’t notice and was almost disappointed at first.

1: This lens is only 2.8 at 10 feet to infinity. The maximum aperture drops as you focus closer, and at minimum focusing distance, where many will want to work to get the true 1:1, it is all the way down to 5.6. That was quite a shock at first, but I soon found that at such close range, even 5.6 gives you very shallow depth of field. It just means less speed, so a tripod will almost always be necessary unless you are really good at hand-holding.

2: The switch between auto and manual focus requires you to push or pull the focus ring. I should have known this after working with the Sigma 105mm, but it is not obvious on this lens and I had to check the instructions. lol.

Again, this information is in other reviews, and it may be obvious to most users, but anyone new to macro should keep it in mind to avoid any surprises.

UPDATE: I’ve left off the old review taken from my first few shots, as I have much more experience to pull from now.

This lens captures beautiful photos, that much is certain. I have not tested the Nikon 105mm VR lens, but from the examples I’ve seen, this lens can still hold its own, even without VR. (I used to think VR was meaningless on a macro lens, but I have found many times when it would be useful.)

Strong points:
* Bokeh (out of focus rendering) is stunning
* Color is rich (super color with D70, can’t wait to see what it does with a D300!)
* Lens is light, less than half the weight of the Nikon 105mm VR
* Focus ring is large and easy to use

Weak points:
* Auto-focus is slow, noisy, and hunts a bit at times
* Lens is not fixed length, short when focusing at infinity, extends out when focusing closer, a significant amount
* Plastic build (doesn’t bother me, but some don’t like it)

For my money, the pros far outweigh the cons here. I use this lens a lot for product photography (at work), non-macro flower and other small items, but I almost never take it all the way to 1:1 because I’m often too lazy to get out the tripod, or not in a situation where a tripod is usable.

One thing to note: auto-focus has recently started acting up on my D70. For a few weeks it would refuse to auto-focus, I would reboot the camera, take the lens off and put it on again, and it would start working until I turned the camera off once more. Most recently I have not been able to get the auto-focus to work at all. (It is the only lens in my kit that does this, so I don’t believe it is the camera.) Since the auto-focus is always slow anyway, I’ve taken to keeping it in manual focus and just dealing with it. It’s a hassle at times, but it does not detract from my enjoyment of this lens.

UPDATE #2: Tamron warranty and service are incredible!

As mentioned above, the auto-focus eventually stopped working completely with both my D70 and D300. All Tamron USA lenses come with a 6 year warranty (6 years!) so I printed a receipt off Amazon, filled out a simple form, and put it in the mail. A couple weeks later I received notice that it was being repaired, no charge of course, and it gave me an order number to track it.

I was leaving on a trip a few days later and didn’t want it sitting outside my house while I was gone, so I contacted Tamron service department to see if I could change the shipping address. It had already shipped out and would be at my house within the week. Unlucky for me it arrived the day I left, but I had someone take it inside for me the next day, so no worries. It has been tested and works perfectly! 5 additional stars for Tamron’s repair department!

I would recommend this lens to anyone wanting to do macro work, portraiture, product photography, or any not-quite-macro nature shots with lots of color.

As Good As It Gets

Like many folks, I read the near legendary level ratings on this lens and finally took the leap as I would be able to compare it side by side with a Nikon 105 2.8. I bought the lens from KEH.com for just 329.00, second hand but in like new condition. This is the DI model which is supposed to be optimized for digital. Some people who have the older version claim there is little or no difference between them.

Sharpness:
The Tamron 90 will give you incredible sharpness. I believe it’s my sharpest lens easily a match for my 1700 dollar 70-200 VR at 90mm. It’s sharper than the Nikon 105 2.8

Color:
Simply faultless. Again, this lens is astounding in color rendition. Skin tones are fantastic.

Bokeh:
Again, this lens rivals my more expensive zoom, though I slightly prefer the bokeh on the 70-200. The Tamron is far superior to the Nikon 105 Micro for out of focus rendering.

Handling:
The lens hood is a bit awkward to get on and off. The auto/manual mode is a push-pull slide color. It works, but it’s easy to slip it into either mode by accident. The focus limit switch is a dial, which is odd. Manual focus is excellent on this lens. The lens is mostly plastic and doesn’t feel as solid as the Nikon 105, but I hear no stories of the Tamron falling apart either.

Overall:
The Tamron beats Nikon’s entry in every area, except build. The Tamron is sharper and has better bokeh. As a portrait lens it does a very good job, though ultimate sharpness is not always desired in model work or even candids. A lot depend on your style. There are certainly lenses like the Nikon 85mm 1.4 which will probably be more flattering to a face. For macro work the Tamron makes no excuses. It focuses down 1:1 nicely and my macro shots have been impressive from the start. Keep in mind that the Tamron 90 is only a 2.8 when shooting objects around 10 feet or further away. Otherwise expect apertures in the 3+ range. This is probably the best macro lens available in the 90-150mm range. I’ve yet to see any portrait shots from the new Nikon 105mm VR than are it’s equal. I give this lens my highest rating.

Great performance and just a great lens - one of my favorites
I am not a professional but an avid amateur enthusiast, this lens is really unbelievable. This is the first non-Nikon lens I have bought and I have been using it for about 14 months.

It is lightweight and sharp end to end, it does a very good job on macrophotography. It tends to hunt a bit when set to full focus, but that can be expected because of the large focal range.

For portraits and very tight close-ups I absolutely love this lens. The image quality and sharpness is out of this world. The design of the focus ring makes it very easy to switch between manual and auto focus, which is probably one of the better design features of this lens.

It feels a little cheap because of the polymer construction but it is inexpensive and very lightweight so it makes it easy to walk around with.

I tested before buying. I used the nikkor 105mm macro and the Sigma 105, the nikkor has a better feel construction wise (for 3x the price) but I could not tell a difference in performance. I felt this lens performed much better than the Sigma 105mm.

I own 5 lenses this is one that I always carry with me and when you get it, it will always be in your camera bag.

Great binoculars
I have used many binoculars over the years. I used to use Steiners on a regular basis and was looking at getting a pair of Steiner 8×30 Military R binoculars ($700 on Amazon) for myself recently when I came across the Barska Battalion series. They match the Steiner binoculars in quality, features and performance but at at only $113. I’m very happy with these binos.

Samsung Sound Bar Does The Trick!
Please understand…this Soundbar is NOT a full 5.1 channel surround sound system. This is an economical piece of hardware that improves the average tv speaker. It is crisp, full, and loud. The included subwoofer does not rattle the floor but adds a nice fill in for some bass response. Easy to set up. Easy to use. Fits in very well with the TOC Series of Samsung TV’s given this one’s color. I believe it comes in black as well. Overall, very pleased with it. Very nice sound and is perfect for a small room application. If I had to pick a bone about it…the external wireless subwoofer has a cooling fan that kicks in when you turn off the system. It can take 20 minutes before shutting off. Sounds like a small hum but it’s the fan. Definitely recommend based on the price point.

Better Than Expected
I know very little about the technical aspects of sound equipment so this review is aimed at fellow non-techies. The sound on my Samsung LED TV is WOEFUL despite playing around with the sound menu. From the start, the thing vibrated and distorted the sound at certain levels - very annoying, particularly to my border terrier!

I’d been looking around for a sound bar as I didn’t want a massive piece of kit, rather something that has a small footprint and was simple to set up. I saw the Samsung HT-WS1G in Best Buy in Union Square, liked the look of it, thought it sounded good in-store when compared to the other models on display and considered the price reasonable ($299). I went home to do some research and, admittedly, was initially put off by the negative reviews. However, I thought would give it a go as I knew I could always return it.

SET-UP
Set up was pretty straight-forward involving an optical lead and a power cable (great for those like me who want to curl up in a ball when they venture round the back of the TV). There was also an audio input cable should you prefer this option. I do, however, think that the instruction manual could have been clearer when it came to linking the wireless subwoofer to the main speaker. I had to go online because following the instructions just wasn’t working. I then almost had to pay a minimum of $18 to ask a Samsung expert online how to remedy my problem - pah! No chance.

Fortunately, there were quite a few postings online from people who had had similar problems and it took a guy from Montenegro to clear it up. Very simply, all you had to do was make sure the TV was off while you were setting the subwoofer up. Why they couldn’t put this in the instruction manual is beyond me; 5 words “make sure TV is off” - hardly a thesis.

SOUND
Even without the subwoofer, the sound was so much better but when we finally got the sub linked up - wow! My husband and I kept looking at each other and saying “wow, did you hear that?” every time someone slammed a door on the TV. To us, the sound is rich and deep with different modes to choose from (movie, music, news and a neutral setting). I’d read that it wasn’t brilliant for filling large rooms with sound; I don’t know how large a room these people were talking about but our living area is about 25′ x 12′ and it really does give the impression of surround sound.

REPORTED NIGGLES vs OUR EXPERIENCE
I’d read that that subwoofer fan hums quite loudly - I haven’t had a problem with this as yet; we haven’t heard a peep from ours. Nor have I had any interference with our wireless network so I haven’t had to change channels. Weirdly, unlike our Samsung TV, its light comes on when it’s on stand-by. Some people have said it’s enough to be disruptive if you have the speaker in your bedroom but I don’t think it’s such a big deal. The sub also comes with a kind of foam muffler thingy should the bass be too much but we haven’t had to use it - the dog has been eying it, however, so maybe it will have a use after all.

In all, I’m very pleased with the HT-WS1G. I’ve had some late nights recently just so I can replay all my DVDs with this new-found sound. I’m glad I disregarded the negative reviews. For the price, it’s GREAT!

Quality Sound @ A Reasonable Price
I think in order to really have an appreciation and understanding of this product, the person whom is buying it needs to take a step back and evaluate what it is they are buying this product. In my honest opinion this is a GREAT a person, like myself, and the set up I am trying to utilize it for. I am a HUGE movie buff and enjoy watching movies and sometimes play video games in my bedroom. I have a 40′ Samsung Series 7 television with a PS3. This sound bar gives me the sound that I am looking for where I am watching movies, which is a small area. The sound you will get will be clear and an upgrade from the factory speakers you are listening to now. I have above average listening ears and know that if I do want a louder and bigger experience, I can go downstairs to the living room. It will give you multiple selections that will allow you to customize your listening preference. I prefer the “cinema” setting. It allows the subwoofer (which is wireless) to be used for deeper tones and a movie theater style experience. The price, IMO, is set in the middle of everything you’re looking at. I like Bose, but it’s a little pricey for me just to have in a bedroom. Most of the products that I was looking at were in the $1000+ range. It is also not so cheap that the quality your getting feels like your getting something from a low budget electronics store.

Final Eval: The simple truth is that most television speakers just plan suck and this is a vast improvement. Nice upgrade for small room or casual listening, and the price is right as well.

If you’re a Foreigner fan, especially one who admires their early work & modern lineups, this DVD reissue of the new 1991 video is an considerable fragment of any Foreigner collection. It’s more a “Late The Music” style documentary than a concert video, but noteworthy of the concert video is vintage leisurely 70’s footage of the new lineup that can’t be found anywhere else. This footage provides some seldom seen treats, such as getting to peek singer Lou Gramm & novel drummer Dennis Elliott performing their gradual 70’s trademark dual drum-solo…something they stopped doing in the 80’s. The interview’s include discussions with members no longer in the band, as well as with founder Mick Jones & singer Lou Gramm, and provide a broad deal of history & information not covered anywhere else. Foreigner was never a band to do lots of interviews or capture in self-promotion, preferring to let their music “do the talking” instead. As a result however, many of the millions of listeners who enjoyed & bought their music over the years know very puny about the band itself…surprising for a group that’s sold over 40 million albums in the U.S. alone. This DVD provides a very rare contemplate of the individuals unhurried those major-selling albums & hard-rocking hits, as well as comments from their frail manager, Billy Joel & others. Concert footage covers most of their best known songs, including Feels Like The First Time, Icy As Ice, Hot Blooded, Double Vision, Juke Box Hero & Urgent (filmed at the time each respective song was unusual, and performed by the same members who recorded the unusual studio version), as well as featuring the complete video of I Want To Know What Admire Is.

This video is almost as superior as being at a Foreigner concert. It also gives a biography of the band, and describes how each member joined. I have seen this band several times and the video is like seeing them over and over. Every Foreigner fan should have this video!!

A Perfect Fit
I tried several 2.1 speaker systems to enhance the sound from our LCD HDTV. The 2.1 speaker systems used the RCA audio output from the TV but I was never satisfied with the quality of the sound, even from the Bose Companion system. I think part of the problem is with the low-level output of the TV’s RCA audio connection and for this reason I decided to look for a speaker system that could take advantage of my HDTV’s digital optical audio output connection. I also didn’t want to have a five-speaker system all around the room and so I focused my search on soundbar-type systems. The Sony HT-CT100, just recently introduced, fit the bill perfectly and comes at a price much lower than the Yamaha and Philips soundbar systems with optical inputs.

The Sony HT-CT100 produces great sound. The speaker bar is very low profile and takes up very little space whether you sit it in front of the TV or hang it on the wall. The subwoofer is large (about the size of a desktop PC) and sits on the floor. The subwoofer has a nice display along the top edge of the box to tell you the various system settings. Best of all, the 200 watt amplifier (built-in to the subwoofer) has multiple HDMI and optical audio inputs and acts as the control center for a complete home theater/sound system. This was an unexpected bonus -no need for a separate home theater receiver. Just plug your satellite system, DVD player(s), game consoles, etc. right into the HT-CT100 and control everything from the remote. It’s an elegant solution and I haven’t seen anything else quite like it. Since the system takes in digital video/audio directly, you get to enjoy full Dolby Digital surround sound. The system can belt out remarkable volume levels and rich, deep bass. The speaker bar has left, right, and center channel speakers along with the remote control IR sensor. The Sony remote supplied with the system will control all your Sony components; however, if your HDTV, DVD player(s), etc. are not Sony brand (like mine), then be prepared to buy a universal learning remote in order to program the HT-CT100 commands. While I can decipher having several remote controls, I prefer to use a single remote control so that my family has an easier time turning on the TV or watching DVDs.

The price of the Sony soundbar system is very reasonable considering its power output and multiple digital video/audio inputs to control your home theater. The quality is impressive (though I did have to return my first system due to a soundbar speaker buzz -my second system is flawless) and it looks and sounds like high-end gear. When I shop for items like this, I look at features, quality, and price without regard to the brand. In this case, Sony simply has a product that works great and provides an elegant solution for those wanting home theater sound in a low-profile package. It’s a winner.

Takes a bit o’tweaking
For my needs, this pseudo surround sound solution is perfect. I did not want to run wires all over my house, or feed them through the walls or floor, etc. Nor did I want some flaky wireless rear speaker 5.1 solution.

I wanted something simple, elegant, with as few wires as possible. I have the Samsung LN52A550 television, and wanted something to complement it well. I looked at the Samsung HT-X810 2.1 soundbar with the integrated upscaling DVD player for compatibility sake, but it was too large and way to expensive ($600 and no blu-ray?!).

The Sony CT-100 works great so far. The small, unassuming speaker fits perfectly under my LCD panel and it complements it well. The subwoofer reminds me of a PC tower, but I love the fact that it includes three (3) HDMI inputs. I routed my HD cable box and an upscaling Sony DVD player into it.

At first, I found some of the vocal dialogue sound from 5.1 sources a bit muted, but I tweaked the system to my liking (+4 center speaker; -3 subwoofer; Movie soundfield), and this seems to fix the problem right up.

All in all, this won’t replace a true 5.1 system, but the right and left simulated surround sound works surprisingly well. Then again, I have a family room on the average to small side, and this system might work better in these types of environments.

All in all, this is exactly the system I was looking for - it’s simple, sounds good, and looks good.

***** UPDATE: July 29, 2008 *****

I still enjoy the system, and think it was worth the $299, but I have found that to really enjoy the system, you must be directly in front of the speaker. If you are off the the side, it sometimes gets a bit hard to hear dialogue. In fact, I still think the dialogue gets a bit muted through these speakers. If there is any ambient noise aruond you (e.g. a fan, a/c unit, etc.) it can really affect the sound output quality.

Just my 2 cents, but I would rank this 3.5 stars.

Good sound for the money with some limitations
Summary: Good value for the price and a big improvement over TV speakers, but surround effect is weak and there are some limitations in connectivity, subwoofer placement, remote control and audio settings.

I wanted something that would provide improved TV and DVD sound as well as streamed iTunes music without investing a lot of money. This system fills those requirements very well. The sound has a satisfying richness and depth, although the “surround” effect is weak. More like being surrounded on 3 sides, which is pretty much the norm for systems without real rear speakers. To their credit, Sony did not try to mask this limitation by adding reverb effects at ridiculous levels like some systems I’ve heard.

I’m happy with my choice, but if you are contemplating buying this system you should be aware of some of its limitations:

Connectivity-
There are 4 A/V inputs. Three can be connected via either HDMI (video & audio) or digital optical cable (audio). The SAT input also has a Coax jack. The TV audio can be connected via either RCA jacks or digital optical cable. The ports are labeled TV, BD, DVD and SAT, but any of them can be used for anything. Which is a good thing, because I need RCA jacks for the iTunes music input from my Airport Express so I use the TV input for this and the SAT input for the TV.

An additional limitation for audio is that the HDMI audio passed to the TV is inactive if the connected DVD or other device is set to output Dolby 5.1 or DTS audio. Unless you forego Dolby sound you don’t have the option of just using the TV speakers for playing DVDs. You also have to turn on and set the Sony system to get DVD sound. This is not a problem for me, but is for less technophyllic members of the household.

Subwoofer placement-
If you are going to place the subwoofer next to a TV stand, it can only go on the right (facing the TV) because of the placement of the speaker on the side of the subwoofer.

The amplifier is built in to the Subwoofer cabinet, so it must have a clear line of sight to the remote control, and you have to be able to see the display on the front of the unit to tell which mode you are in. No hiding the subwoofer.

Remote control-
The remote control is not a “universal” remote and cannot control any other components other than newer model Sony TVs and DVDs with the “Bravia” system.

Audio Settings-
There is no equalizer or even the ability to directly set the bass/treble balance. Indirectly this is affected by the choice of “sound field”. The choices are Standard, Movie, Music, Sports, Game and P-Audio, all of which have different mixes of surround effect/stereo separation, bass/treble balance and reverb. You can also adjust the relative loudness of the center speaker and the subwoofer. However, these adjustments affect all sound fields, and getting it right for, say, Music may result in way too much subwoofer for Movie.

The overall sound volume is adequate for my 11′ x 20′ TV room, but the maximum output may not be sufficient for large rooms.

The quandary is that this state continues an melancholy practice of re-selling ancient material with a splash of unique material that is available no where else, meaning that people who bought the previous releases are forced to retract them all over again if they want the other films. There is no intention to select the modern material separately

It basically repackages three previously released DVDs, Rudolph & Frosty’s Christmas in July, The Year Without a Santa Claus (Deluxe Edition) and Frosty’s Winter Wonderland/Twas the Night Before Christmas. These are the staunch same disks that you would have received before, with even the disk shroud art intact.

The modern material is included on the “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” disk. This is an outlandish choice, as this is the only non-Rankin/Bass release and of course, this Dr. Seuss worship has seen a variety of releases, including a unusual 50th Birthday Deluxe Remastered Edition special edition. Tagged onto the disk are three Rankin Bass rarities, “The Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold”, “Pinocchio’s Christmas” and “The Stingiest Man in Town”. All three are making their first appearance on DVD, and they are really what most people will be buying this dwelling for. It is vast to have them released at last, but I would have preferred an individual DVD.

There are calm a few Rankin/Bass Christmas specials that have not had a DVD release, and I anxiety this being the wave of the future. The same quandary happened with the Popeye and Batman cartoons (also by Warner Bros) series until definitive collections were finally released. Warner Bros objective doesn’t seem to pick up what fans want, and are more concerned with squeezing every possible dime out of their properties.

What I really want is a collection that gathers together all the Christmas specials together giving them the treatment they deserve, including putting the Rankin/Bass name up on top and giving them their due credit. That would acquire me really joyful, even if it meant buying them for a third and final time.

It’s fabulous to observe all these Christmas specials in one package, and particularly the three that were previously unreleased on DVD (”The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold,” “Pinocchio’s Christmas,” and “The Stingiest Man In Town.”

NOW, as far as I know, there are only three Rankin/Bass Christmas specials not available on DVD: “The First Christmas,” “The Diminutive Drummer Boy, Book II,” and “The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus.”

All of which are owned by Warner Bros. SO, why did Warner skimp out on us and not include these three as well?? PLUS, they simultaneously released a original deluxe edition of “Jack Frost,” which is awesome, but again, why didn’t they bother to achieve it into this boxed location? They could have EASILY fit those three other specials onto the same disc.

Of course, from a sales standpoint, the retort to all these questions is obvious: give the public a itsy-bitsy more of what they want each holiday season, and they’ll impartial maintain buying and rebuying ad infinitum. But this is seriously getting extinct, Warner. Why not impartial give us everything you’ve got at once, and close being the True “stingiest man in town? ”

Complaints aside, this is a improbable site for anyone who doesn’t beget any of these specials. If you acquire last year’s Christmas Television Favorites boxed state, you might want to maintain out until next year when Warner is obvious to pull another double, triple, fourple-dip on us. Hopefully then we’ll regain those other three specials, plus Jack Frost, all in one expansive Christmas DVD collection.
